By installing the Mentionaut extension or using the service, you agree to these terms. If you do not, do not install it.

What Mentionaut does

Mentionaut finds the things named in a podcast episode — books, studies, people, ideas, films, music, places — and shows them beside the video with the second each was said and a link to a public record about it.

What it does not do

Mentionaut does not check facts. It does not rate speakers, score credibility, flag claims, or tell you what is true. It reports what was mentioned and where to read about it. Any conclusion about a claim is yours.

A reference appearing in the panel is not an endorsement of anything said about it, by us or by anyone in the episode. A source we link to is a third party's record; we do not vouch for its contents.

Where the data comes from

• Captions. We read the caption track YouTube publishes for a video. We do not download, copy, transcribe or store the video or its audio.
• Episode details. Titles, descriptions, durations and thumbnails come from YouTube's official interfaces for that data.
• Descriptions. Every description in the panel is copied from a public reference source and carries a link to the record it came from.

We do not republish episodes, transcripts, or any substantial part of anyone's content. What the panel shows is an index of what an episode referred to, presented to a reader who is already watching that episode.

Who can see indexed data

Indexed references are shown to signed-in members, for the episode they are watching. There is no public directory of episodes, no browsable archive, and no page that publishes what an episode contained. We index in order to annotate the page you are on, not to publish a copy of it elsewhere.

Accuracy

Captions are machine-generated and frequently mishear names. Reference lookups are automated. The panel will sometimes miss things, and will sometimes point at the wrong record. When a name cannot be matched confidently, it is listed as mentioned and left unidentified rather than guessed at — but that safeguard is not a guarantee of correctness. Treat what you see as a starting point for reading the source, which is why every entry carries one. The service is provided as is, without warranties of any kind.

Your account and the free allowance

Signing in lets you index episodes that nobody has indexed yet, up to a monthly allowance. Episodes that are already indexed remain free to read. We may change the allowance; we will not retroactively take away access to episodes already indexed.

You are responsible for what happens under your account. Do not use the service to break the law, to overwhelm it with automated requests, or to attempt to extract the corpus in bulk.

Independence

Mentionaut is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google, or by any podcast, show, host or guest. Show and episode names are used only to say which episode is being described.

Ending it

You can uninstall the extension at any time, and delete your account from the settings page. We may suspend an account that is abusing the service, and we will say why.

Changes

If these terms change materially we will date the change here and tell account holders by email.
